BREAKTHROUGH JAZZ LP NOW IN DXD
My listening notes Absolutely top-notch chamber jazz. In this epoch-making album, Montgomery demonstrates how he virtually invented the contemporary jazz guitar. At the same time he's being accompanied by a dream rhythm section who flow gently over a gentle swing beat. It's a wet dream of perfect small ensemble jazz, with everybody working effortlessly together. Also of note is Tommy Flanagan's wondrously elegant and tasteful piano playing. Another one of those great jazz records made in the Great Old days of the 1960s. And the sound is in perfect synch with the music. Polka Dots and Moonbeams is just an utter masterwork. Montgomery takes the tune apart and reassembles it beautifully, ditto Flanagan, earning comparison with Bill Evans’ 1962 all time version for the ages. In Bob Witrak's DXD sound, this is a must have for those who like this kind of music aka jazz. Me included!
