A lovely album in excellent sonics
The performance by Steinberg and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is suitably lithe, articulate and dance like. Steinberg's take on the two movements of the "Unfinished" Symphony No. 8, are characteristically direct and without editorialization. Together with excellent engineering from Bob Fine and his team, this is a lovely album which provides much enjoyment here.
8th OK, 3rd high energy
Both of these are "sturdy" performances, but I prefer that of the 3rd. The "Unfinished" seems a little rushed to me. The latter has a lot of competition as almost every noteworthy conductor has recorded it. I probably prefer Karajan or Marriner for the Unfinished (though the Marriner version is "finished" which makes it unique among all recordings). As to the 3rd, this is a symphony that can profit from a high energy performance, which this is. All participants turn in a first-class effort. The Command recording via 35mm magnetic film then 7 1/2 IPS consumer (Ampex) tape has been expertly transferred, as usual from HDTT. I have enjoyed a number of their dubbings of these classic (yet rare to find) recordings.
Excellent recording of an outstanding performance
Steinberg turns in an outstanding performance--at least as good as it always seemed, in the days of the vinyl release. This really comes to life now that the sonic limitations of the old pressing are resolved. Strongly recommended.
As usual with the Command Classics series, these performances were crisp and full, with Steinberg at his best on the podium. It doesn't get much better.
Fan of Schubert 3 & 8
