This recording of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 1 performed by Byron Janis with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra under Kirill Kondrashin is a landmark in classical music history. Captured in June 1962 at the Bolshoi Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, this session was among the first classical recordings by an American label Mercury Living Presence made in the Soviet Union during the Cold War era.
