A mixed bag
This is something of an odd couple. The piano concerto, although well played, is an elusive piece which is difficult to love compared to - say - Prokofiev's 2nd and 3rd. Its case is not helped by archetypally shrieky CBS strings. Oh dear. Thin balance is also, surprisingly, an issue with the Scythian Suite. Although well played, its pile-driving dynamics and savage impact is vitiated by a distinctly bass-light presentation. Not one of Wilkie's better days at the office, I suspect. Stick to the classic Dorati/Mercury for this one, therefore.
