Remarkable conductor, almost forgotten
Paul Paray is one of the excellent conductors of USA orchestras who tend to be forgotten, although their output on the recording platform is still on the highest quality. Thanks to HDTT's effort to keep them alive and available, they will no way be burried.
Legendary Mercury recording with P. Paray
During the sixties each major town in the USA wanted a renowned symphonic orchestra. This was the case with Detroit (and Pittsburgh Cincinnati, Minnesota etc.) as well and with their leader Paray they were acknowledged performers for the Mercury Living Presence catalog - especially for french music. Chausson' symphony is not a very frequent item in recorded music catalogs but the other two: Carmen suite and Debussy's fine Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune are really well-known pieces. This transfer gives what anyone would expect from HDTT, clear and elaborate sound-stage with pleasant acoustics. On the whole it does not sound any better than the average HDTT transfers. The main problem is with the liner note: first the origin of the transfer-material has not been specified - why (tape or "film"); second the author of the notes mentioned Antal Dorati's short tenure with the Detroit orchestra stating he was Czech. No, he was Hungarian as Ormandy, Reiner and Szell - all of them amply represented in HDTT's offer list. We of course do not buy these recordings for the liner notes.

eXcellent all around, performance, music, remastering, sonics. big thumbs up!
paray conducts chausson, bizet and debussy
Paray is warm and affectionate in these works. The recordings, which are examples of early stereo from Mercury, come up shiny and bright
Very good, Thank you.
