Uneven
There's only so much that can be done with an album recorded in 1960 I guess. I have another remaster of this done by Candid Records and released in 1989. Between the two of them I'd have to call it a toss-up. I believe the Candid's vocals sound a bit smoother to me, and soundstageging varies cut to cut for which I believe is superior. If all you have is a old LP, this one is more than worth the money. If like me your a big Otis fan you'll probably want them all. JMHO

Be grateful
Just to have Otis available in this format is a blessing...great addition to any blues fan's collection

WILL MAKE A BLUES LOVER OUT OF YOU
I'm normally a classical and/or jazz listener. When I saw this pop up on HDTT, it piqued my curiosity. I recall hearing a blues collection LP years ago that had one great cut on it by Otis Spann, so I figured what the heck and downloaded this one. The DXD sound is what audiophiles expect from albums on this website: soundstage, details, dynamics, and "here" rather than "there." It lets you hear just what a master Spann was. He has almost insanely strong hands, endless stamina, and technique to burn. He goes on dizzying long runs that somehow managed to include intricate figures and counter figures, and his singing perfectly complements his piano playing. How substantial is this music? It's arresting, and at least sometimes, very moving. “Going Down Slow,” “Bad Condition,” and “Half Ain’t Been Told” are folksongs – is blues folk music? – of real emotional impact, get-youthinking-about-life-and-death material. If you are a blues lover, or even if you “ain’t”, this one is certainly worth a listen!
