Among the stellar musicians who brought Mancini’s vision to life was alto saxophonist Ted Nash. A master of his instrument and one of the most in-demand session players of the West Coast scene, Nash’s playing stood out in the original soundtrack recordings. His solo work on the title theme and on “Dreamsville” remains essential listening for anyone who wants to understand the sound of late-’50s jazz on the small screen. It wasn’t long before Nash was invited to step into the spotlight himself. In 1959, Crown Records released this album, The Music of Peter Gunn, conducted by Nash and arranged under the watchful ear of producer Maxwell Davis. Unlike Mancini’s official soundtrack album on RCA Victor, this is not simply a replay of the television cues—it is a reinterpretation, seen through the lens of the very musicians who had helped shape that original sound. Here the Peter Gunn themes take on new life: brass punches harder, saxophones smolder longer, and the rhythm section drives with a rawer, more club-ready urgency.
