Mingus Dynasty - Charles Mingus and His Jazz Groups
Charles Mingus’s album Mingus Dynasty occupies a crucial place in his extraordinarily creative period at the end of the 1950s. Although they are often discussed together, the two records were not released in the same year. Ah Um came out in 1959, while Mingus Dynasty, though recorded later that same year, during sessions on November 1 and November 13, was ultimately released in May 1960 by Columbia Records. The proximity of their creation nonetheless links them artistically. Both works reveal a composer and bandleader operating at a rare peak of imagination, though Mingus Dynasty leans further into dense orchestration and expanded ensemble writing.
