The album Dig, released in 1956 on Prestige Records, is a vital snapshot of Miles Davis at a crossroads, transitioning from the cool stylings of his earlier recordings toward the fiery, hard bop language that would come to dominate the jazz scene of the 1950s. Although the music was recorded in 1951, the album was not released until several years later, by which time Davis’s star had risen significantly. Nevertheless, Dig offers listeners a raw and revealing glimpse into the emergence of a new sound in modern jazz and the early careers of several artists who would later become legends in their own right.
In retrospect, Dig can be viewed as a launching pad for Davis, who would soon embark on some of the most innovative phases of his career; for McLean and Rollins, who would become torchbearers of their generation; and for the hard bop movement, which would define much of the decade’s jazz output. It is a recording that demands attention, not just for what it sounds like but for what it represents: the sound of evolution in real time.
