My Favorite Mahler 9
I actually grew up with this performance on LP’s Accordingly, I know it intimately. Although I’ve accumulated scads more recordings of the work, this remains my favorite. It is extraordinary in every way! And the HDTT mastering is wonderful: clear and rich. I know it’s not well known, but give it a try. You won’t be sorry.
Unexpected Mahler performance.
I was not interested in this recording since I like Mahler recordings by L. Bernstein and many Russian recordings have poor quality. That is not true with this recording: give it a try and you will never regret.
Kondrashin's Mahler 9
Kondrashin's Mahler cycle is a hugely important chapter of the history of Twentieth-Century Mahler performance, and this 9th is well worth acquiring, even though it is unlikely to be a first choice for many. It is a brisk and bracing performance, and the sound is less problematic than previous releases.
Under the radar
A vintage truly wonderful performance by a Russian conductor and orchestra.
Great sound for 1964 and great performance
I just finished listening to this high-res recording on DVD-Audio, and found the interpretation excellent and the sound surprisingly good for 1964. Kiril Kondrashin was an extraordinary Mahlerian, and I highly recommend this recording.
