Total remix of multi track master
This one I did A/B not because I needed to, since the buried vocal was painfully obvious, but because I needed to listen to the original beauty of this session. More than that it might be conjecture for me, as a recording engineer, to point out the other problematic artifacts. Let my rating do the talking.
Better balance than the 20 bit remastered Impulse cd.
As a reviewer said below, Johnny's voice is now no longer way out in front of the instruments. It's now balanced in the front to back sound stage. Also, now you can clearly hear the bass. It's no longer pushed dimly into the background and everything is clearer and more detailed than before. A much better mastering than the 20 bit Impulse reissue.
Feeling the air in the studio
Comparing the DSD with the CD, I was struck by the space in the recording. The voice has not been put forward, it is placed at the same level as the instruments, allowing to appreciate, for example, the beautiful interplay between voice and bass in "My one and only love", or the subtle brushes of Elvin Jones in "Dedicated to you". It's the air flowing among the players making them unfussily present. Great album!
