Few recordings capture the soul of English music with such authority as this collaboration between Sir John Barbirolli, the Sinfonia of London, and the Allegri Quartet. These are not just performances of repertoire; they are interpretations shaped by the conductor’s own heritage and identity.
And then there is the sound itself. These are stereo recordings from the golden age, the late 1950s and early 1960s, when engineers captured orchestras with a natural balance and warmth that has rarely been equaled since. The strings bloom with richness, the quartet emerges distinctly yet never feels isolated, and the spaciousness of the hall is preserved without artifice. This is stereo at its most honest: vivid, but never gaudy.
