3 way superiority
This is a superior composition by Elgar, a superior performance by Barbirolli, and a superior recording and release by HTTT. The Nimrod movement is great.
Edward Elgar Enigma Variations op 36 - Halle Orchestra Orchestra - John Barbirolli - Conductor
Enigma Variations have always been a favorite of mine and Barbirolli has always been my choice. I still have this recording on LP! Now I have it on this terrific download. Barbirolli had the exact right touch on all of Elgar. I've had recordings of more recent and great sonic merit but less on interpretation - very disappointing - and some big names, too! The recording is a bit dated but VERY serviceable. With this release and with today's playback equipment it sounds better than ever. This is definitely a front runner that won't go to waste even when the "definitive one" arrives (if ever). Make sure your playback equipment can handle the low organ notes at the end!
