This session, recorded for Verve, is a celebration of that spirit. The word “confrères” means “colleagues” or “brothers-in-arms,” and the title couldn’t be more fitting. Hawkins is joined here by trumpeter Roy Eldridge and fellow tenor Ben Webster—two musicians of equal stature, with equally forceful personalities. Eldridge, fiery and unpredictable, was always a bridge between swing and the bebop revolution. Webster, once a protégé of Hawkins, developed into a giant in his own right, known for his breathy warmth on ballads and his rough growl when the tempo quickened. Together, these three men represented different shades of classic jazz expression.
