A favorite Jochum Bruckner 5 in improved sound
I have always admired this1958 BRSO DG studio performance - my first exposure to Bruckner's magnificent score - which reflects Jochum's characteristic commitment to long silences and sometimes hectic changes of tempi. I found HDTT's remastering to improve upon the still satisfactory DGG CD pressing of this performance by opening the sound of the BRSO's massed strings during their many fortissimo passages, and also through a modest but still noticeable improvement of individual instrumental timbers during solo passages. I also own a copy of Praga's SACD remastering (from "best available sources, whatever that means) of Jochum's live Philips -recorded performance with the Concertgebouw, but for whatever reason I enjoy the greater spontaneity and more distant sonic stage (balcony circle vrs 5th row orchestra) perspective of the DGG / HDTT remastering, even while granting the glorious sounds of the Concertgebouw orchestra.

Jochum's Bruckner 5
This may not be quite as sensational as the previous release in this (hopeful) series of the first symphony, but it is still pretty great. The sound, while a bit hot, has a vividness and three-dimensionality the CD lacks. Hopefully the famous fourth will be next and the not famous sixth will follow!

Hoping for even more
Jochum's set of Bruckner symphonies from DG with the Berlin Philharmonic and Barvarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is a classic. DG in Japan has issued symphonies 7, 8, and 9 from this set on SACD. I am very pleased to get this recording of symphony 5 with DSD processing. It sounds great. I hope that more symphonies from this set will be offered.
