From Henry Fogel's review of this transfer: "I do find Chibás' firmer focus, and stronger timpani, bass, and cello presence, along with the somewhat wider dynamic range, to be the preferred version"

To the manor born
This towering masterpiece is one of the most difficult in the entire symphonic repertoire to bring off successfully. Recordings abound of this great monster, but holding tight to its narrative from beginning to end seems to be a problem, plus building and shaping its immense structure evenly and logically. I dare say many might argue, these are due to its glorious and bountiful length; however the quality of the music itself is so remarkably organic and distilled with such genius, every moment germinating from the previous, that nothing is superfluous or redundant, leaving not a single moment of its 80+ mins. for the conductor to naval-gaze or slacken his/her concentration. Having well over a dozen recordings of this symphony, mainly by the all-time greats, and listening to it for more than 50 years, this performance of Furtwangler’s for me has virtually no equal bar perhaps Knappertsbusch. Furtwangler’s is so veridical, and the line is held so tightly, without ever, at any moment, slipping in his fingers. Moreover, it seems to move by its own force, without human intercession, so all one hears is the music itself, where – strenuously asserted by so many of his orchestral members during and beyond his life – Furtwangler actually “becomes the music itself”. In this work and performance, Furtwangler was truly to the manor born. Gil Sullivan
