A reference version.
Great playing. All sections of the orchestra shine. The strings are magnificent and play as one. Clean, realistic sound. You can't go wrong with this one.
Bad day at the office?
My admiration for Reiner and the CSO, in its heyday, knows no bounds. But this is rather routine, detached Brahms 3; it lacks the fire, drive and sheer power of his later epic Brahms 4 with the RPO. Moreover, the transfer has acquired in a rather rough-edged string tone - not a Shaded Dog characteristic! For Reiner completists, perhaps - but for others, there are better Brahms 3s out there.
