Perhaps the best (technically) of Steinberg's four....

I agree with the other reviewers. I now have all four of the symphonies from HDTT but, somehow, this one has the most appealing sound. I sounds as new as today. Steinberg has a handle on the central-European "sound" and I believe he learned a thing or two from his association with Toscanini, also. This set of four can hold its own with almost any traversal around. Steinberg opts for some very brisk tempos in certain parts that set him apart from the herd. The Pittsburgers respond with all they've got. Just great music, that's all.

Show my respect to Steinberg

Steinberg's recording of the Brahms Symphony No. 2 was nominated for a Grammy for Classical Album of the Year in 1962

Steinberg's Brahms 2nd.

The Steinberg Brahms cyle is surely one of the most important things this site has brought to light. This cyle is fully competitive with anything else out there. I've never heard these performances on CD, but the sound here is splendidly bright and forward.

Superb mastering of a classic performance

I still remember the review by David Hall when William Steinberg's Pittsburgh recording of the Brahms 2nd Symphony was released on lp by Command Classics. He called it the first recording that actually sounded like a symphony orchestra. While his comment might be considered enthusiastic hyperbole, it was indeed a fine recording capturing a superb performance which nicely combined the central European tradition of playing Brahms with the energy and rhythmic clariety of Toscanini, under whom Steinberg served as an assistant. The recorded disappeared ages ago, so I was delighted to find it via a Google search in the catalogue of High Definiition Tape Transfers. The mastering was perfect and brought back all the great memories of this recording on lp without the lp's built in distortion and limited frequency response. I've listened several times. It only gets better. Thanks for making this buried treasure available again.
