Brahms Symphony No. 1 - Jascha Horenstein The London Symphony Orchestra
beautiful, romantic music; beautiful recording and performance

Olympian
HDTT has now released desert island performances of all four Brahms Symphonies -- Monteux/VPO for no. 2, Walter/CSO for 3 and 4, and now this. No Brahms symphony is easy, but the first may be the most challenging, in that one must simultaneously do justice to one glory after another, without losing the work's shape. Horenstein and the magnificent 50's and 60's London Symphony get all the passion and grandeur, but never lose their way. And the sound, particularly space and dynamic range, is no less stunning. This recording has always sounded great, on Reader's Digest Vinyl and Chesky CD (out of print), but this transfer somehow finds room for improvement. Bravo to everyone, from Brahms to BobW.
