Great Performance, wonderfully remastered.
Great Performance, wonderfully remastered.

Szell/Fleischer Brahms 1st and 2nd Concertos
I have heard the cds of these performances with Szell/Fleischer/Serkin and reel to reel tape captures the full orchestral and piano impact of these pieces. They are available in 7ips on eBay. Got a machine, use it. Also am transferring these tapes to cd, better sound than cds put out by Sony. Best of luck to all Steve
Superb performance in even better sound
This is one of the reference performances of Brahms' 1st Piano Concerto. I had a 24-Bit Remastering as part of the 5-CD Sony Box Set containing Szell/Fleisher performing the Brahms and Beethoven Piano Concertos along with Mozart's 25th Piano Concerto. That is an excellent box set with very good sound. This recording is even better and well worth the investment.
Fleisher and Szell's Brahms First Piano Concerto.
This is a review of the remastering, not of the performance, which is a classic and everyone should own in one form or another. I splurged on the DSD 128 for the first time and the results were . . . mixed. On the plus side, the sound stage felt so wide and the hall ambiance so realistic I felt like I was there myself. A few seconds in I realized this came at a cost, when the strings entered they sounded thin and without the impact I had remembered. As the performance went on the sense that the sound picture was simply stretched to widely continued I couldn't escape the feeling that there is an upward limit to the possibilities of refurbishment of some older recordings. I felt myself missing the punchier, more narrow sound of the CD. I am generally a huge fan of HDTT wizardry and suspect I would have been happier with the lesser transformation 96/192 would have offered.
Perfect
Go buy this one a need for any fan of Brahms
