Excellent performance in great sound
The clean attack of the Pittsburgh strings is very well projected, particularly in the 'Finale’, which keep the evenness and energy of the musical line moving with precision without losing inertia. Overall, Steinberg and the Pittsburgh deliver an outstanding, invigorating, highly musical performance of this symphony. The DXD release I'm listening to sounds terrific here.

Making good, better
I was very impressed with DG's remastering of the Command Classics' Steinberg/PSO recordings of LvB. The presence, clarity and power all seemed to be there. Well HDTT has done it again, all the good points of the DG, with greater depth and that lovely bass growl is back. Well done! I hope the balance of the symphonies are forthcoming.

A classic re-revealed...
Steinberg assisted Toscanini at the NBC Symphony and his Beethoven exhibits much of the energy and drive of his mentor. I had a couple of the Command Classics when they first appeared (on LP) and considered them state-of-the-art at the time. 35mm mastering improved S/N ratio and dynamic range, so those masters were better than many DDD masters made since. It is a shame that Universal has chosen not to release a set of the complete Steinberg/Command recordings. They were probably the best both musically and technically of his career.
