Antônio Carlos Jobim’s album The Composer of Desafinado, Plays is a landmark in both the bossa nova movement and the broader landscape of popular music in the 1960s. The album’s significance lies not only in Jobim's compositions but also in its polished production and its role in spreading Brazilian music internationally.
Jobim, along with João Gilberto and others, crafted bossa nova by merging traditional Brazilian samba with the harmonic complexity and improvisational style of jazz. This fusion created a laid-back, breezy sound that became emblematic of Brazilian music for a global audience.
Claus Ogerman's string arrangements on this album are sophisticated yet restrained, complementing Jobim’s minimalist style. The orchestrations provide a lush background, allowing Jobim’s melodies to shine without overwhelming the music's subtlety. This collaboration would continue throughout many of Jobim’s later works.
