By 1958, Miles Davis had already carved his place in modern jazz, but Milestones marked the beginning of something bigger, the shift from bebop and hard bop toward the modal explorations that would redefine the music in the years to come. Recorded at Columbia’s famed 30th Street Studio in New York, with George Avakian producing and Harold Chapman at the console, this album captures a band on the brink of greatness, and a leader sharpening the tools that would make Kind of Blue possible just a year later.
