On Jazz in 3/4 Time, Max Roach explores the possibilities of jazz in triple meter, turning the familiar waltz pulse into a springboard for improvisation. Joined by Sonny Rollins, Kenny Dorham, Billy Wallace, and George Morrow, Roach places rhythmic invention at the heart of a program featuring “Lover,” “Little Folks,” “I’ll Take Romance,” and the expansive “Valse Hot.” It is a distinctive small-group session that invites listeners to hear three-quarter time in a fresh light.
The music’s fascination lies in the balance between a steady three-beat foundation and the freedom of the phrases unfolding above it. Melodies provide a clear point of departure, while shifting accents and open-ended improvisation expand the rhythmic possibilities. The extended “Valse Hot” gives this approach its broadest canvas, making the waltz feel less like a formal dance and more like an invitation to explore.

Components used for Transfer:
This transfer leverages precision analogue playback and mastering-grade digital conversion. The signal path begins with a VPI HW-40 Anniversary turntable paired with an Ortofon MC Anna cartridge, fed through a Custom Phono Pre-amp designed by Victor Khomenko of Balanced Audio Technology for accurate RIAA equalisation. The analogue signal is converted via a Merging Anubis converter, powered by a Teddy Pardo Linear Power Supply, synchronised to an Antelope Audio 10MX atomic clock for temporal accuracy. All components receive isolated power conditioning through a Shunyata Research Everest X with Sigma-X cords, while grounding infrastructure utilises Shunyata ALTAIRA hubs to minimise noise floor and preserve sonic detail throughout the transfer chain.
