Jonathan Horwich Producer & Engineer
Stunningly captured on tape in a recital in Luxembourg, Russian pianist, Mark Zeltser, brilliantly plays Prokofiev and Chopin before a live and enthusiastic audience. Mr. Zeltser studied with the renowned Soviet teacher Jacob Flier and came to this country with his family in 1976. By 1981 he had appeared at Carnegie Hall. The performance is one of those moments where the music, the piano (9 foot Steinway), and the surroundings create a magical moment sure to excite those who love classical music of the highest order and in the highest fidelity. Originally recorded on a Mark Levinson ML5 custom Studer tape recorder, only two microphones were used (B&K instrument microphones), creating a natural and spacious sound.

Mark Zeltser plays
I purchased this to see how good the HDTT transfer would be. Super. The other and main reason is that a piano recital I have I cannot find in high-res. The performance is done by Bruno Leonardo Gelber and he performs Beethoven Piano Sonatas vol. II released on Denon (CO-72539) which I have had since the cd release. Gelber's recital is excellent. While the two recitals are obviously different I wanted a good hi-res solo and have it now with Mark Zeltser's great solo recital.
Dynamic Piano Playing at its Best
This is a beautiful piano recording. The playing is dynamic and the recording is outstanding. Mr. Zeltser has a wonderful touch, playing with great feeling and dynamics. Apparently a live performance in a large venue, his sound swells from a barely audible pianissimo to a thundering fortissimo that fills the hall. And the recording is magnificent, as only a live, analog tape recording can be. Piano is difficult to capture properly, but here the microphones are placed properly so that the piano and the acoustics of the hall are perfectly balanced, as though you were there, front-and-center. If you love thoughtful yet powerful piano, played from the heart, you must hear this recording!
Warning: 'Audiophile' recording
It has been a truism since the birth of recorded sound that great musical performances often sound like ****; conversely, recording where the big emphasis is on sound are usually musically risible. This is a good example of the latter. Mark Levinson may have recorded this on a Studer sprinkled with pixie-dust, but all you hear is the plodding, rather one-paced, characterless performances of these Prokofiev and Chopin pieces. Since hardly nothing ventures above mezzo forte, you can't even tell whether the pixie-dust actually worked... Sorry.
