Walter's Final Das Lied
This was a relative disappointment, not with the transfer, but rather with the performance itself. Any Das Lied is only as strong as soloists, and here this performance suffers in comparison with others. Hafliger fights a valiant but losing battle against the orchestra, and, well, response to voices in a subjective business, but Miller's warbling just didn't do it for me. This is a shame, as Walter's conception of the work is second to none.
Mahler Das Lied von der Erde with Bruno Walter
Mahler plus Walter plus lovely recording!! Nothing more to say- Walter was one of the greatest conductors of the 20th Century.
A must release of Mahler's Das lied!
HDTT's pure DSD 128 is the absolute best release of B. Walter 1960 Das Lied von der Erde with incredible details & musicality! I would hope they can also release the Klemperer-Ludwig, the Reiner-Forester or the Walter-Ferrier...I would buy any of these immediately again in DSF128....Bravo for another superb release!
Legendary Recording / Vivid DSD Sound
This legendary recording hardly needs an introduction to anybody who got into classical music as childhood turned into adulthood after WW II. But just in case, rest assured that Bruno Walter was one of the greatest conductors ever, and given the fact that he personally knew and worked with Gustav Mahler, he had a special access to this now ubiquitous musical world. The tenor soloist is Ernst Haefliger, with quite a bit of shine as well as metal in his voice. Mildred Miller is a mezzo-soprano whose artistry is perhaps little remembered these days. Like Haefliger, however, she knows exactly what she is doing and few women soloists have sung with such commitment. In any case, this recording is self-recommending, and the DSD sound is the most vivid iteration yet. Strongly recommended for both the special musical and vivid DSD sound values. I thought I was having troubles w the DSD download, then discovered that I had inadvertently left the JRiver software on a setting that faded one track into the next. Once I corrected the setting, no complaints. Thanks for the sweat and care that probably went into getting this available. Just an awesome, unbelievable re-creation of Bruno Walter's unique way with his mentor and friend, Gustav M. Whew!!!
