Sir John Barbirolli is the grand master of Elgar interpreters and here we have a demonstration of why this is so. His reading of this symphony is simply spot on and the Halle play for him as if their lives depending on giving him this flawless performance.
Legendary EMI recording engineer Christopher Parker delivers excellent sonics in this recording from Kingsway Hall: great detail and resolution, full frequency extension, nice soundstage. This recording is an example of why the "two Christophers" recordings from EMI have long been so highly valued by audiophiles. (The other Christopher being producer Christopher Bishop.)
