Sparkling Miniature Christmas Gems
Biggs mentions in the liner notes that these little miniatures were arranged by Daniel Pinkham. So Biggs, Pinkham, chamber orchestra = a very refreshing contrast to the full-bodied slush from the rest of my Christmas albums! Colorful, vibrant, delightful, a bit of the Renaissance thrown-in, with Biggs at his favorite type of "reform" organ, almost a portative chamber-type instrument, with bright catchy colors and a singing quality from those lower-pressures he was advocating for. Orchestra players are not always in perfect tune, but that seems to fit the character of the pieces. This transfer is clear and spacious with pin-point presence, and goes all the way up to the top of the spectrum with sparkling air. There is a teensy bit of flutter, which is honestly unavoidable in a recording like this.
Hopes for a pleasant Christmas recording were dashed
I was looking forward to hearing a nice 'new' Christmas recording, but I'm afraid this is one where the super accurate transfer process did not create a recording that is pleasant to listen to! This recording has a brittle, harsh tone that was probably intended to give good results on an LP played on poor equipment in the 1960s - but played on quality equipment today my wife and I were cringing! This is definitely a 'Do not buy.'
Best Album of Christmas Music Ever
Generally, I hate Christmas music. It is almost always dull, bland, insipid, and uninspired. This album, however, is simply beautiful. Beautiful arrangements, beautifully performed. Out of print for seemingly forever, I have been looking for a replacement copy since my old cassette tape wore out years ago, and... here it is. Thank you HDTT!
