Mravinsky nails it. So does Melodiya.
I have several recorded 10ths (including Jarvi, Ormandy, and Haitink), and each has something to commend it. Mravinsky's is the whole package, perhaps because he could identify with what drove Shostakovich to write it. Ensemble playing is tight and focused, and Melodiya's sonics capture the live performance exceedingly well. My go-to for this work.
Great music, ghastly sound.
The great Mravinsky and his Leningraders had a special unique way with Shostakovich, This is a dark, searing reading, played with passion and depth. So, 5 stars for the music. But, as one might well have expected, 1 star for the shrieking and unpleasant Melodiya sound. So I have averaged both scores to give the final rating.
Blistering performance
Inspiration performance of an extraordinary piece. Recording quality is what you would expect from the source and the period, but can't diminish the value of such an engrossing musical experience.
Classic performance beautifully remastered
As usual with HDTT this remastering of a great performance somewhat dingy-sounding in earlier expressions comes up fresh, lush, and more transparent than ever.
Superb performance of Mravinsky
Mravinsky's performance is superb. Capturing sound is very good and very good scanning of the master tape, but "fortissimi" sound compressed without relief, surely this is due to limitations of the master tape.
