Reference recording
Sonically, this is the least satisfying of all Vienna Octet HDTT releases i own (I have both "Beethoven septet" & "Mozart divertimenti"). Every listening, i feel a certain dryness - a certain harshness in the string attacks - that doesn't fit the viennese spirit of the piece. That's a pity. Interpretation is one-of-a-kind, with imbuing mystery in opening and last movement. That's a bit of a disappointement, but not all releases can reach the absolute level of perfection and i feel very grateful when comparison is done with latest Eloquence cd release. Actually, there is no comparison at all : HDTT is far superior, end of discussion. This is the best available digital release of this masterpiece.

Excellent!
Like my other recent HDTT purchase of The Vienna Octet’s classic Beethoven Septet, this DSD transfer is miles ahead of my old Decca CD in clarity, transparency and resolution. Well done HDTT!

great octet, the vienna octet, tho one gets a sense of a group quickly thrown together, shows masterful chops.

MASTERS OF THIS REPERTOIRE IN GREAT SOUND
These guys, led by Vienna's Boskovsky brothers, deliver what has to be the definitive performance on record. Every note, phrase, and tempo is sublime, like Schubert's composition itself. And the recording! I got the DXD, and it's as exalted as the playing. One of the most natural-sounding tracks in my download library, it's utterly free of anything that might fatigue or otherwise displease the ear. A must for all lovers of classical music. And for Schubert lovers. a no-brainer you-gotta-have-it download!
