Igor Markevitch was widely admired for the clarity, discipline, and structural insight he brought to the orchestral repertoire. Born in Kiev and educated in Western Europe, he combined an instinctive understanding of Russian musical style with a sharply analytical conducting technique. His collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra during the early 1960s produced several notable recordings, and the orchestra responds here with playing of remarkable precision and brilliance. The LSO’s luminous string sound, incisive woodwinds, and commanding brass lend vivid life to Rimsky-Korsakov’s richly detailed scores.
Recorded in 1963 for Philips, these performances capture both conductor and orchestra in exceptional form. Markevitch’s interpretation balances color and structure, allowing the music’s narrative character and orchestral brilliance to emerge with equal clarity. More than a century after their creation, Scheherazade and Capriccio Espagnol remain enduring examples of Rimsky-Korsakov’s genius for transforming folklore, dance, and legend into orchestral works of irresistible vitality and imagination.

Components used for Transfer:
This transfer leverages precision analog playback and mastering-grade digital conversion. The signal path begins with a VPI HW-40 Anniversary turntable paired with an Ortofon MC Anna cartridge, fed through a Custom Tape Pre-amp designed by Victor Khomenko of Balanced Audio Technology for accurate RIAA equalization. The analog signal converts via a Merging Anubis converter, powered by a Teddy Pardo Linear Power Supply, synchronized to an Antelope Audio 10MX atomic clock for temporal accuracy. All components receive isolated power conditioning through a Shunyata Research Everest 8000 with Sigma-X cords, while grounding infrastructure utilizes Shunyata ALTAIRA hubs to minimize noise floor and preserve sonic detail throughout the transfer chain.
