Ruggiero Ricci/Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra
I live in Cincinnati, and actually own like-new copies of both the original stereo and monaural Decca Gold vinyl discs of this great recording. And I spent many hours watching the great Max Rudolph conduct the orchestra from the late nineteen fifties through the early sixties. Being intimately familiar with the Cincinnati Music Hall recording venue, I can assure the listener that the orchestra has never sounded "thin" in live performances, but I too noticed, (as mentioned by another reviewer), in listening to both the original stereo and monaural vinyl recordings, a distinct favoring of the soloist over the orchestra--seemingly a purely technical decision. As a comparison, notice difference in engineering emphasis in the magnificent HDTT release of the Decca Gold Cincinnati Bruckner 7 recording--as the orchestra is superbly recorded in its full bloom. If one spends just a few minutes listening to this recording, and especially on a high-end system, it must be agreed that this is one of the finest Decca Gold recordings ever made. I will certainly purchase the download to add to my original Decca Gold stereo and mono discs.
Interesting but enjoyable repertoire
Of course the Paganini is famous, particularly the final "La Campanella" movement, but I also enjoyed Saint-Saens' first foray into the Violin Concerto repertoire, which is in one continuous movement. His 2nd is a more full-blown concerto, while his 3rd is not only a much bigger, more authoritative affair, but one of the most beautiful violin concertos of the 19th cent. Having never before heard his 1st though, it was a pleasure to listen to it, and Ricci is just brilliant, tossing these 2 concertos off with his inimitable ease and aplomb. Gil Sullivan

Ruggerio Ricci is superb in these works
Ah, what a great pleasure to hear Ruggerio Ricci in these works! His technique is simply astonishing, and I'm always engaged by the power with which he plays. This recording captures all of the sweet beauty of the violin sound that he delivers - never harsh, always pure. On the other hand, the sound of the orchestra captured in this recording is a bit disappointing. It's a bit thin and scrawny sounding. Whether that is the orchestra itself or the recording technique used I can't tell (I'm guessing its the latter). But, I will say that I can totally ignore it to thoroughly enjoy the sound of Ricci's violin and his performance which are superbly well captured. In summary, if the sound of the Cincinnati orchestra is a bit thin by comparison, the power, beauty and consummate control of Ricci's performance more than makes up for this. I got this for Ricci's performance and am VERY happy. HDTT delivers another very fine transfer in the DXD copy to which I am listening. Very clean, very low noise threshold, simply a pleasure to hear.
