One of the best Das Lied von der Erde recordings
Reiner's Das Lied von der Erde, with Maureen Forrester and Richard Lewis, gets less attention than Klemperer's with Christa Ludwig and the incomparable Fritz Wunderlich. But it is almost as good. Ludwig is slightly more sensitive to the text than Forrester, but vocally it's a draw. Lewis, like every other tenor who has sung this piece, suffers from not being Fritz Wunderlich, but among the non-Wunderlich aspirants he's among the best. The orchestral part is sharper and more animated than the slightly languid Klemperer. I have heard the "Living Stereo" reissue of this recording. Reiner is sometimes thought of as a cold if brilliant interpreter, but that is not the case here. The hdtt remastering is not astoundingly better, but it is better, with tighter bass and clearer separation of orchestral sections. If you love Das Lied, you will want this, along with a few other outstanding versions (Klemperer, the stereo Walter, Kubelik or Haitink with Janet Baker in the alto role).

Highly Recommended!
Overall this is, by far, the BEST mastering of this top notch version of Mahler's Das Lied by Reiner that I have listened to...in DSD128 it easily surpasses in de tails & musicality even the SACD edition! Very highly recommended!
Reiner, Soloists, and CSO, "Das Lied von der Erde"
A true touchstone recording by Fritz Reiner, Soloists Maureen Forrester and Richard Lewis, and the incomparable CSO. It's hard to believe that Reiner was not an ardent devotee of Mahler's music, given this recording and the Reiner/CSO recording of Mahler's 4th Symphony. "Das Lied..." was recorded in the pre-renovation Orchestra Hall, Chicago on November 7 9, 1959 when Reiner and the CSO were at their peak. This recording was made by RCA's Richard Mohr and Lewis Layton who together produced and engineered so many of the great recordings by Reiner and the CSO. When I saw this was available in FLAC-96k-24b digital, I had to have it. Thank you, HDTT, for an excellent job.
