Recorded in the wake of Broadway’s 1960 theatrical premiere, this classic Columbia release finds jazz polymath André Previn transforming Lerner and Loewe’s lush, romantic score into a swinging, sophisticated modern jazz statement. Backed by the telepathic rhythm section of Red Mitchell and Frank Capp, Previn navigates Arthurian melodies, from the playful bounce of "I Wonder What the King Is Doing Tonight" to the tart, harmonically rich phrasing of "If Ever I Would Leave You", with a pristine classical touch and effortless cool-jazz swing.
Highlighting the trio's telepathic interplay and Previn's knack for clever chord substitutions, numbers like "The Lusty Month of May" burst forth with an infectious, upbeat momentum. The record succeeds because it honors the original thematic weight of the musical without taking itself too seriously, weaving jazz improvisation into theatrical arrangements so fluidly that listeners are left with an entirely organic reinvention. An essential, high-fidelity intersection of Broadway songcraft and West Coast jazz.

Components used for Transfer:
This transfer leverages precision analogue playback and mastering-grade digital conversion. The signal path begins with a modified Nagra 4SJ, fed through a Merrill Audio Master MX Tape Head Preamp. The analogue signal is converted via a Merging Hapi converter, synchronised to an Antelope Audio 10MX atomic clock for temporal accuracy. All components receive isolated power conditioning through a Shunyata Research Everest X with Shunyata Sigma-X power cords, while grounding infrastructure utilises Shunyata ALTAIRA hubs to minimise noise floor and preserve sonic detail throughout the transfer chain.
