Walton magic!
I had Francescatti's recording of Walton's Violin Concerto on LP many moons ago and it remains my favourite performance - dashing, elegant, luscious playing, beautifully transferred here by HDTT. And then there's a fab bonus - Szell unbeatable rendering of Symphony No.2. An unmissable disc!

Szell's Walton
There have been several outstanding versions of the Walton Concerto over the years, but this is certainly one of them and it sounds fantastic. The second symphony is the essential item here, however; a reference recording from the day of its release and here sounding better than it did on CD.

Just plain excellent!
Outstanding interpretations both, with the Cleveland and Szell making the case that the Second Symphony is just as worthy of our attention as the more celebrated and popular First. An outstanding Modern Classical offering that I recommend without hesitation!

Very fine
I've known and loved the Walton Violin Concerto for decades, having a CD of Heifetz, who commissioned it. When this download became available, I questioned whether I would bother when you have the greatest violinist ever, playing it! But I have sincerely enjoyed Francescatti's reading, as indeed, Szell's performance of the 2nd Symphony, which I had never heard before. Well recommended, and of course, the remastered sound as always is impeccable. Gil Sullivan

A classic of the gramophone
The British composer William Walton is best known for a small number of great works, such as Belshazzar's Feast, the 1st Symphony, Violin Concerto and Partita for Orchestra. This release couples CBS and Epic label performances, the latter of which also appeared on the highly collectible and expensive British Columbia SAX LP label. Francesactti gives a romantic account of the Concerto, with plenty of swooping and swooning and virtuosity, although the start of the finale is scrappy and Ormandy can't compete with Andre Previn on Kyung Wha Chung's classic Decca account. The Symphony was dedicated to the Clevelanders and Szell gave the first American performance with them as well as conducting the European premiere with the Concergebouw. From the first note to the last it remains definitive. No-one else has come close to equalling it's precision, beautiful phrasing in the Lento and corruscating power and such it is a classic of the gramophone in DSD128 sound that is far superior to anything from official sources. The only regret is that the original LP coupling of the Partita is missing.
