Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra bring together the vivid colours of Manuel de Falla and the sweeping drama of Richard Wagner. Falla’s rhythmic energy contrasts with Wagner’s expansive melodies and rich harmonic language, offering two distinctive settings for Stokowski’s expressive approach. The recording also holds historical interest as a document of one of the twentieth century’s defining conductor-orchestra partnerships, whose influence helped shape the Philadelphia Orchestra’s celebrated tonal richness and international reputation.
Stokowski’s importance extended beyond the concert hall: through recordings, broadcasts, and film, he helped introduce orchestral music to audiences far beyond its traditional circles. His work with Philadelphia stands at the centre of that legacy, reflecting an era when a conductor and orchestra could develop a distinctly recognizable musical identity. This release offers an opportunity to revisit that tradition and the enduring appeal of Stokowski’s imaginative approach to orchestral sound.

Components used for Transfer:
This transfer leverages precision analog playback and mastering-grade digital conversion. The signal path begins with a modified Studer A810 with Flux Heads, fed through a Merrill Audio Master MX Tape Head Preamp. The analogue signal is converted via a Merging Anubis converter, powered by a Teddy Pardo dedicated linear power supply synchronised to an Antelope Audio 10MX atomic clock for temporal accuracy. All components receive isolated power conditioning through a Shunyata Research Everest X with Shunyata Sigma-X power cords and Omega-X Interconnects, while grounding infrastructure utilises Shunyata ALTAIRA hubs to minimise noise floor and preserve sonic detail throughout the transfer chain.
