Swiss conductor Peter Maag was uniquely suited to Schubert’s musical world. A deeply thoughtful and spiritually inclined artist, Maag brought uncommon transparency, lyricism, and humanity to the Austro-German repertoire. Though often celebrated for his Mozart interpretations, his Schubert performances possessed equal distinction: flexible yet structurally firm, warmly expressive without sentimentality. A protégé of Wilhelm Furtwängler, Maag combined intellectual insight with natural musical instinct, shaping long spans with remarkable patience and clarity.
This live January 1975 performance with the Boston Symphony Orchestra captures Maag in a repertoire that perfectly matched his temperament. The orchestra responds with luminous string playing, burnished brass sonorities, and exceptional rhythmic precision. Recorded in the rich acoustic of Boston’s Symphony Hall, the performance conveys both the grandeur and intimacy of Schubert’s masterpiece, a reading notable for its spacious phrasing, flowing momentum, and deeply humane spirit.

Components used for Transfer:
This transfer leverages precision analog playback and mastering-grade digital conversion. The signal path begins with a modified Technics 1500 Deck with Flux Heads, fed through a Merrill Audio Master MX Tape Head Preamp. The analog signal converts via a Merging Hapi converter, synchronized to an Antelope Audio 10MX atomic clock for temporal accuracy. All components receive isolated power conditioning through a Shunyata Research Everest 8000 with Shunyata Sigma-X power cords, while grounding infrastructure utilizes Shunyata ALTAIRA hubs to minimize noise floor and preserve sonic detail throughout the transfer chain.
