Schubert’s Fourth and Sixth Symphonies represent key stages in his growth as a symphonist. The "Tragic" Symphony grapples with Beethoven’s dramatic style, while the "Little C Major" explores a lighter, more theatrical language influenced by Rossini. Both works, though early, demonstrate Schubert’s melodic inventiveness and his evolving orchestral imagination. They offer a glimpse of the composer in transition, still learning from the Classical past, but beginning to carve out his unique Romantic voice. Mercury’s audio quality is outstanding, with the LSO recordings recognized as some of the most sonically refined within the Living Presence Series.
