Morton Gould’s Carmen for Orchestra is a bold, mid-20th-century reimagining of one of the most famous operatic scores ever written. Georges Bizet’s Carmen (1875) has long been irresistible to composers, conductors, and arrangers, thanks to its melodies that stick in the ear and rhythms that never lose their fire. Gould, an American master who balanced popular appeal with uncompromising craftsmanship, took up the challenge of creating a purely orchestral concert work from Bizet’s opera. The result is both homage and reinvention.
