Wonderful transfer limited by old technology
The analog to digital transfer was wonderful. The sense of an orchestra captured inside of huge room was thrilling; however, the strings were congested and there was an upper bass peak apparent in the lower strings. These were problems inherent in the original equipment.

One of the Best-Available Mahler 4th Recordings!
Probably one of the best performances and best-sounding recordings of the Mahler 4th Symphony out there. Szell has a really good feel for this work, and his selection of Judith Raskin as soprano soloist for the final movement is just right - she has the voice of a child, which is what Mahler calls for. You can't go wrong with this account!

A Big Improvement
I owned the original HDTT version of this recording and felt that it had serious pitch problems at the end of the third movement that made it difficult to enjoy. The pitch problems are quite a bit better on this Redux version. I also purchased the large Szell set from Sony, which has this performance remastered by Andreas Meyer, who I think does a very good job. I presume this CD was based on the Japanese SACD, which is the only way to get this remastering separately. If you’ve been listening to this recording since the LP days, the HDTT will feel familiar to you, in a good way, buy I have to say that the new Sony version has even better pitch stability and a nice shimmer in the strings with less distortion. It's pretty much better in every technical way, but the HDTT has a nice big sound that might make it more fun to listen to. It’s really a personal thing, but HDTT has made improvements and deserves a lot of credit given that their source is almost certainly not as good as what Meyer had to work with.
Gorgeous
I’ve owned versions of this wonderful performance since the ‘60’s when i had it on commercial reel to reel tape. it never sounded so good. You are in the auditorium!
A Classic
This is a legendary recording and performance. Great to see it is available now here in high-rei format.
