His direct, unsentimental approach gives the music’s great choral declarations their full weight while allowing its quieter passages to offer genuine consolation. The performance’s power lies in that balance: monumental in scale, yet attentive to the tenderness at the heart of the work.
Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau bring distinctive artistry to the solo passages. Schwarzkopf’s finely shaded soprano lends warmth and intimacy to the promise of comfort, while Fischer-Dieskau’s expressive diction and authoritative baritone give the music’s questioning a compelling human presence. Supported by the Philharmonia’s orchestral depth and the chorus’s collective strength, they contribute to an interpretation of exceptional gravity, compassion, and expressive purpose.

Artist(s): Conductor - Otto Klemperer
Orchestra - The Philharmonia Orchestra
Baritone Vocals - Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
Soprano Vocals - Elisabeth Schwarzkopf
Chorus - The Philharmonia Chorus
Chorus Master - Reinhold Schmid
Organ - Ralph Downes
Recording Info: Recorded at Kingsway Hall, London, in 1961
Producers: Walter Legge and Walter Jellinek
Engineer: Douglas Larter
Sourced from a 15ips tape
Components used for Transfer:
This transfer leverages precision analog playback and mastering-grade digital conversion.
