Listening to it is both a moving and exhausting experience. Every release beginning with Vox\/Turnabout LPs, has demonstrated the limitations of the original source: dynamic compression, some distortion and congestion, limited frequency response, and a rather dry, close-in orchestral sound. Over time, as transferring techniques have improved, the performance has become easier to listen to. Reissues by Music \u0026amp; Arts, Tahra, Opus Kura, Japanese EMI, and finally Pristine have improved what we heard significantly. Chibas has managed further meaningful improvement. One area is dynamic range he has painstakingly compensated for the compression on the original source, and given us a fuller dynamic range than anything before. He has also achieved his aim of a more present timpani sound and a sense of rhythmic crispness that exceeds prior versions, without losing the beauty of orchestral sound that is a hallmark of the conductor's work. The timpani at the outset of the finale, and the remarkable presence of the double basses, make significantly more dramatic impact than I have encountered on any prior version. The sound quality is one of the best of all the recordings from the wartime period and the results are stunning. Curiously, the volume of the recording was increased after a few bars. In this mastering, these first bars have been raised to the level of the rest of the work. Another problem that had to be addressed was that the soloist was rather closely miked and has a different perspective from the orchestra. This has required that the equalization be slightly adjusted between the orchestral tuttis and the parts when the soloist is playing.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI must confess that I often have problems with the concerto form due to the concessions that have to be made to show off the soloist. There is nothing of this here, which makes it my favourite interpretation of this work, perhaps because the soloist is not a virtuoso, but rather the concertmaster of the orchestra. The result is, perhaps, the most symphonic performance of this work on record, imbued with the symphonic vision of none other than Furtwängler.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003ePerhaps there are greater performances of the Piano Concerto from greater pianists. However, this one has Furtwängler conducting at the top of his form and this, in itself, makes this worth having. There is a strange situation with the first chord of the second movement, appearing in all the sources, which sounds completely different from the rest. I have tried, as much as possible, to make it sound compatible with what follows. These performances are, in my opinion, among his greatest. The Bayreuth Meistersinger, with an excellent cast, is as alive as any on record. The increasing excitement of the chorus as Walther sings the Prize Song is palpable. And the sound is excellent, except for a few seconds at the beginning of the 1st Act and the fact that there are some chunks missing.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI extracted the audio from the famous AEG Factory film of the Meistersinger Prelude because I always thought it a magnificent interpretation. Although improving the sound has made some orchestral mistakes more evident, this is still such an unusually lean and powerfully fleet interpretation in our pompous times that it is well worth listening to. It is one of the fastest performances I have heard, which reminds us that Wagner was played this way before Soltian and Thielemannian heaviness and affectation changed perceptions of how this music should sound.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAgain, there is no other concert performance of the Prelude \u0026amp; Liebestod from Tristan \u0026amp; Isolde as powerful as this one. There is, of course, drama and ecstasy, with that typical Furtwängler heroism and eroticism. The playing of the orchestra is stunning, despite high-frequency distortion at critical times. The sound was difficult to equalize, perhaps because the acoustics of the hall is different from the others. However, after much work, I was able to get an excellent sound, combining detail with power. The EMI studio recording is very good, but any Furtwängler lover knows that when conducting live, Furtwängler was at another level. In these two acts we can hear this difference. In addition, his performances right after the war were particularly intense, as were the wartime recordings. After 1950, his intensity declined.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e In addition to being able to appreciate two complete acts in a live performance, we have a magnificent Tristan from Suthaus. Listening to his contribution here, one can imagine that this voice is what Wagner must have had in mind for a Heldentenor. His voice is solid, round, weighty and always right on the note. His expressiveness is also outstanding. I have read that Suthaus was a terrible stage actor, but listening to his recordings with Furtwängler one can deduce that he did all his acting with his voice. And this may well be his most expressive performance.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e The rest of the singers are also mostly very fine. Erna Schlüter's Isolde is not at the same level as Flagstad. However, it is an excellent performance, also quite expressive. Perhaps the one weakness may be that, somewhat like Mödl in the 1953 Fidelio, her interpretation is a bit too human. Some people may prefer that, I prefer a more mythological interpretation. I was lucky that the first time I heard this symphony was in the EMI LP of the March 14, 1949 performance. I have never had such an impact from my first exposure to a work. Both that performance and this one from 1944 are necessary for any Bruckner collection. One must have both. The sound is good, although there is a change of equalization from the middle of the 2nd movement to the end of the Adagio. During this period, bass drops off considerably. I have not heard this addressed in any of the versions that I have of this recording.
