A tribute to the conducting genius of Ataúlfo Argenta
Argenta shapes a propulsive symphony and finds the adequate rythm in every part. None of his rivals comes close to his reading : even the mischievous Münch or the rigid Szell don't deliver such treat and rush the music, losing Schubert's mind. Exhilarating performance. Beautifully enhanced by the old french orchestra sourness. Sound is very good and does justice to HDTT's usual transfers.
Schubert Ninth in a Marvelous 'Sleeper' Recording
The Schubert Ninth is one of my favorite classical symphonies and I own a ridiculously large number of recordings of it ... including three by Toscanini, four by Furtwaengler, two by Szell and Bruno Walter ... as well as digital offerings by Bernstein, Rattle, Abbado (2 versions) ... you get my drift! This 1950s stereo recording by the late, much-lamented Ataulfo Argenta was a major surprise ... lean and propulsive, but beautifully shaped by subtle use of rubato, I rank it alongside Toscanini's 1941/42 Philadelphia Orchestra recording and Abbado's later (digital) recording with the Mozart Chamber Orchestra as something close to perfection. Stereo sound is very fine ... incredibly good given the recording's age ... and Argenta has his French orchestra playing with both precision and warmth. Yes, those very French French horns take a bit of getting used to ... but their nasal quality is underplayed and, in any case, probably a fair representation of the kind of small-bore brass that would have been heard in Schubert's Vienna had Schubert lived to hear it performed there. This CD, expertly transferred by HDTT from a 15 ips tape source is a major discovery ... and a thoroughgoing delight as a performance!
Real analogue sound.
Wind instruments sound beautifull with full bloom and reverberation in the hall. I could hear that even in the sample file.
recommended recording
The interpretation is captivating. The sound quality is good considering the age of the recording, except for the silent tape noise
Great Schubert from a truly French-sounding orchestra, no apologies!
Whatever happened to the once distinctive sound of the French orchestra, as heard so clearly here, not least with the lovely horn vibrato at the opening? The hand-picked orchestra 'of a hundred soloists' were an excellent orchestra, representing that 'old school' at it's finest. All round an outstanding performance to compare with the best anywhere and at any time. Clear late-1950's stereo, expertly transferred by HDTT. Very highly recommended.
