Still memorable

Back in the 60s, I was in college and recall the excitement at the new music director of the BSO. I had never heard of Mahler but bought some of the nicely packaged "Aristocrat of Orchestra" LPs. I still think this symphony is the best introduction to Mahler. I was blown away by the work and by the performance. The one word I feel best describes Leinsdorf is "underrated". Many of his BSO recordings fell out of the catalog and are only now, thanks in part to HDT, and as can be seen by the many enthusiastic reviews of his releases on here, is he getting the appreciation he deserved. I recently read his book, "The Composer's Advocate" and that title seems to describe him to a T. I'm pleased to say my memory of this recording (now in better sound and on better equipment ) was not faulty.
