In the pantheon of jazz greats, few figures are as foundational - or as resilient - as Coleman Hawkins. Known widely as "The Father of the Tenor Saxophone," Hawkins revolutionized jazz improvisation in the 1930s and continued to evolve with the music through subsequent decades. By the time The Hawk Swings was recorded in 1960 and released on the budget Crown label in 1961, Hawkins was already a living legend. Yet this modestly packaged session reveals not a man resting on his laurels, but one still deeply engaged with the forward motion of jazz, swinging with vitality and searching for new expressive pathways.
