By 1960, Coleman Hawkins had been a central figure in jazz for more than three decades. His sound, broad, commanding, and unmistakably human, had first defined the tenor saxophone in the big band era, and it continued to evolve as jazz itself transformed through swing, bop, and modernism. Coleman Hawkins and His Orchestra captures him at a moment of renewed vitality: mature, assured, and quietly adventurous, leading a small group of musicians who share both his sense of discipline and his appetite for exploration.
The word “orchestra” here carries a touch of irony, for the band is in fact a tight, conversational combo. With Hawkins at the helm on tenor saxophone, trumpeter Thad Jones, pianist and vibraphonist Eddie Costa, bassist George Duvivier, and drummer Osie Johnson provide the framework. Together they achieve an ensemble sound with the fullness of a larger unit, each player listening, responding, and leaving just enough space for Hawkins’s deep, eloquent tone to take center stage
