When The Mancini Touch was released in 1960, Henry Mancini was already a familiar name in American music. Fresh off the acclaim of his television and film work, he turned his attention to an album that would showcase his skills as a bandleader and arranger. What emerged was not a novelty or a side project but a statement of purpose, a demonstration of how he believed music ought to be made: with taste, balance, and precision.
The sessions took place over four days in August 1959 at RCA Victor’s Music Center of the World in Hollywood, a studio that represented the perfect blend of tradition and modern technology. Produced by Dick Pierce and engineered by the young but already masterful Al Schmitt, the album was cut as part of RCA’s celebrated “Living Stereo” series. That branding mattered. These records were engineered to show off the new world of stereo hi-fi, and the sound here is as clean and dimensional as anything from that golden era of recording.
