When RCA Victor issued The French Touch in 1959, it was more than a cleverly branded anthology of orchestral showpieces. It was a declaration of identity. Under Charles Munch, the Boston Symphony Orchestra had become, in the American imagination, the supreme custodian of French orchestral style. This album, pairing Dukas’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Saint-Saëns’s Omphale’s Spinning Wheel, and Ravel’s Ma mère l’Oye, distilled that identity into thirty-odd minutes of color, wit, sensuality, and technical polish. In the context of RCA’s celebrated “Living Stereo” series, it also became one of the label’s most prized sonic documents of Symphony Hall, Boston, and of the Mohr–Layton production team at full strength.
