Early 19th century German cello compositions
Pierre Fournier performs a recital of Schubert, Mendelssohn, and Schumann works written or transcribed for the cello. By the time of this recording, Fournier had 20 years of an international career behind him and he was established as an elegant player with a beautiful, refined tone. His playing on this recording is beautiful and impeccable, always in good taste. The Schubert "Arpeggione" Sonata is the highlight of this recital, and Fournier plays it very well indeed, in a straightforward presentation with no gimmicks. The other works are fine, but not as interesting, and my interest lagged after a while. The sound quality is clear but tends to be rather dry. This is probably due to close miking and a studio acoustic that wasn't very resonant. The upper register of the cello sounds slightly harsh and glassy, which was definitely not a characteristic of Fournier's tone. I imagine that this is not the fault of HDTT, but is probably inherent in the original Concert Hall recording.
