Good session, nice Van Gelder recording
This album is new to me, so I can't compare to any past releases. But, for me, this is a very nice recording in another excellent transfer by HDTT. The overall sound is open and transparent, with good frequency extension and detail. Here in 1964, Rudy is nicely capturing the sound of a jazz piano in his studio. The sound is balanced with the performers occupying their own space in the sound stage. No gimmicks in post production to spotlight various instrumental solos--just a nice soundstage that is consistent throughout a given cut and that invites one to lean in. And yes, I'd agree that Ron Carter's bass does remain somewhat in the back of the soundstage throughout - still, it sounds very clear and resonant on my system. I'd give it five stars for the recording and transfer from the tape, but one star is dropped for the music itself which is just not quite up to a full five stars for me. Perhaps my mind will change after a few more plays. All-in-all, a very good album that I'm very happy to add to my music library.
Remixed from the multi track master
In this session the life is missing from the original vinyl and subsequent CD release. The highlight of Beatrice for example is Ron Carters solo. It’s muddy and inarticulate compared to the original. I compared it to a lossless compression file of the CD release, and though it may not have a certain airiness, it lacks the feeling of the original ensemble in their glory.

Sam's First Date with Beatrice
Sam Rivers first role as leader is a good one. The quality of the recording transfer by HDTT is as usual pretty darned good. Rivers free flow playing is both out there but in there. He's able to swing, freely move around and use his band to create a pleasing story.

Sam Swings
I cannot recommend this music enough. A real modern classic. The remastering even more so the music really comes alive. Perfect stereo image. The tenor is right out front, for much of the time it seems in duet with the drums. The only small reservation, the bass could use a boost. Nonetheless a keeper.
